Danny Joe Coonts, son of the late Burrell and Zella Mae (Dennis) Coonts, was born on August 2, 1946 in Evans, Missouri, and passed away on Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at his residence in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, at 67 years of age.
Danny Joe grew up in Douglas County and graduated from Mtn. Grove High School.
He was an over-the-road truck driver for many years. Danny Joe, known to those around him as “Hillbilly Joe,” liked to wheel and deal and to barter and trade.
His other favorite pastimes were playing cards, family gatherings, mushroom hunting, telling stories, stretching the truth and telling tall tales.
Danny Joe had a great sense of humor, and enjoyed making those around him laugh.
He was a kind and caring son, brother, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor. He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his son, Tommy Joe Coonts of Drury, Missouri; his granddaughter, Amanda Joe Coonts of Mtn. Grove, who was very special to him and was his pride and joy; his brothers, David Coonts and companion Sue Davis of Cabool, Missouri, Donnie Coonts and wife Darlene of Mtn. Grove, and Dean Coonts and wife Merrie of Vanzant, Missouri; two sisters, Diann Smith and husband Danny of Vanzant, and Darla Beltz and husband Jim of Mtn. Grove; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 29, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. in Pleasant Home Church with Rev. Gail “Bud” Scherer officiating. Darrell Cooley, Billie Hicks, and Bill Conley provided the music. Song selections were “Precious Memories,” “Bonaparte Crossing The Rhine,” “Please Don’t Leave Me, Darlin’” and “Shepherd’s Last Waltz.” Pallbearers were Heath Rodgers, Kaleb Rogers, Justin Smith, Brad Coonts, Burl “B.D.” Coonts, and Rocky Coonts. Burial was in Pleasant Home Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove.
