Edith Christine Headley Ballard

Edith Christine Headley Ballard, daughter of Homer and Florence Parker Vandivort, was born April 16, 1926 near Houston, Missouri. She department this life Friday, October 25, 2013, in her home in Lebanon, Missouri, at the age of 87 years, six months and ten days.

Her father’s family moved into Missouri from West Virginia after the turn of the 20th century.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald Ballard; and a sister, Dora Fry.

Edith is survived by five sons, Bruce Headley of Springfield, Missouri, and Steve Headley, Wendell Headley and wife Joy, Sam Headley and wife Sherry, and Robert Headley, all of Lebanon; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norman Vandivort and BillyVandivort, both of Houston; a sister, Estella Hanna of Cabool, Missouri; several nieces and nephews, as well as a host of other relatives and friends.

She was raised in Texas County and lived her adult years in Texas, Wright and Laclede counties. She graduated from Drury University with both bachelor and master’s degrees. She taught school for over 38 years, the last 18 as a first grade teacher in Conway Elementary School.

Edith was an active member of First Freewill Baptist Church of Lebanon and was involved in every aspect of church work for as long as her health permitted. She especially championed children’s causes and was very interested in child evangelism. He faith was central in her life and she lived her faith in her daily walk.

She loved her sons and was proud of their accomplishments. She loved family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed doing artwork and painting, many of the things she did with her children as a school teacher. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and always enjoyed attending their meetings.

Edith’s legacy will live on through her sons and grandchildren. Her heritage of faith and values will continue into the future through her family and her contribution will be long remembered by all her family and friends.

Her funeral service was held Monday, October 28, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. in Holman-Howe Funeral Home, Lebanon, with Rev. Roger Harwell officiating. Interment was in Union Cemetery.
