Berniece Melba Holaday, 96, of Success, Missouri, passed away August 27, 2013 in Houston House, Houston, Missouri.
She was born October 9, 1916 in Montauk, Missouri to Grover and Polly (Jones) Kirkman.
Berniece was raised in the Summersville area and spent her entire life living on a farm in Success. She attended school and received her teaching degree and taught in several rural schools in Licking, Plato and Success. She also helped out at the Success Post Office where she was officer in charge.
She married George W. Holaday May 9, 1939 in Houston, and to this union three children were born, Gary, Debbie and Linda.
Berniece was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; a daughter, Linda Wolford; a brother, Delmar Kirkman; and two sisters, Juanita Daugherty and Faye Flowers.
She is survived by her son, Gary Holaday and wife Barb of Bucyrus, Missouri; her daughter, Debbie Holaday of Rolla, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Wolford of Houston, Jennifer Leatherman of Texarkana, Texas, Darin Leatherman of Texas and Phillip and Andrea Curry of Houston; one great-grandchild, Tyler Curry of Houston; and a sister, Mable Mitchell of Licking, Missouri.
Berniece enjoyed traveling and went on many cruises throughout her life; she toured Europe, Alaska, Australia, Hawaii, Asia, the Caribbean and many other places. She could also play a mean game of cards, especially pitch or pinochle.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Services were held Saturday, August 31, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Evans Funeral Home with Pastor David Barbee officiating. Pallbearers were Joe Kirkman, Mike Flowers, Butch Daugherty, Harvey Davis, Darin Leatherman and Phillip Curry. Honorary pallbearer was Walter VanBibber. Burial was in Boone Creek Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
