Junior Ray Shelton

Junior Ray Shelton, son of the late Aaron and Mattie Lee (Butts) Shelton, was born on January 11, 1940 in Doniphan, Missouri, and went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at his residence in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, following a one-year battle with cancer. He was 72 years, seven months, and four days of age.

Junior grew up and attended school in the Doniphan area. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Smith on March 31, 1959 in Gideon, Missouri. Five children were born to this union. They made their home in the Mtn. Grove area for many years.

Junior was a self-employed carpenter during his adult years. He liked building and remodeling homes. He enjoyed being outdoors, especially when hunting and fishing.

Junior was saved at age 37 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near Cabool, Missouri. He was a longtime member of Prior Freewill Baptist Church where he enjoyed attending services as long as his health permitted.

He was a loving and kind husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His favorite pastime was playing with his grandkids. He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jesse Ray Shelton, and by five brothers, Tommy Shelton, James Shelton, Marion Lee Shelton, Aaron Cook, and Clarence Cook.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Carolyn Shelton, of their home; two sons, Joey Shelton and wife Wendy of Pomona, Missouri, and Rob Shelton and wife Charity of Mount Vernon, Missouri; two daughters, Virginia Merchant and husband Stacy of Manes, Missouri, and Janet Jones and husband Tom of Willow Springs, Missouri; one brother, David Shelton of Cabool; three sisters, Pat Shelton of Ava, Missouri, Kathy Wells and husband Don of Cabool and Barbara Shelton, of Cabool; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. in Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Rev. Willard Burch and Rev. Dwayne Sparks officiating. Elaine Burch, Willard Burch and Dwayne Sparks provided the music. Song selections were “Going Home,” “I Hold a Clear Title,” “Until Then,” and “This is What Heaven Means to Me.” Pallbearers were Durrell Smith, Tim Smith, Michael Shelton, Joey Shelton, Adam Merchant, Hershell Shelton, and Aaron Craig. Honorary pallbearers were Randy Shelton and Jared Merchant. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove.
