Etta Mae Smith, 92, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2011. Interment was Thursday, December 22, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis.
She was born May 27, 1919 in Koshkonong, Missouri, the daughter of Henry and Lily Stahlman Ball.
She married Delmar E. Smith on October 4, 1941 in St. Louis. The Smiths owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Cabool, Missouri, from 1969 until 1976, when they moved to Columbia. Etta was a cook at Shepherd Elementary School, and later worked in catering for Stephens College. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, gardening and spending time with her family.
Etta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Del; a brother, Paul; and a sister, Bea Ball Clark.
She is survived by two brothers, Justus Ball of Koshkonong and Johnnie Ball of St. Louis; a sister, Rena Ball Vollmar of Alton; one daughter, Janet Caldwell; three sons, Dennis Smith, Jerry Smith, and Jeff Smith; grandchildren Michelle Hitch, Duane Caldwell, Marshall Caldwell, Stephanie Soder, Candace Smith, Danny Smith, Shannon Smith, Caitlin Smith, Sorsha Smith; and ten great-grandchildren.
