Ludwig John Scherer, Jr. of Cabool, Missouri, passed from this world February 26, 2012 at Cabool.
JR, as he was known, was born in Sparta, Wisconsin, August 29, 1949, the only living son of Ludwig and Meta (Lueck) Scherer.
He attended Leon Grade School and graduated from Sparta High School in 1967. At 50 years of age he graduated from Rice Lake Technical College with a two-year degree in mechanical drafting. His first employment began at Sparta Foss Locker Plant and then Hiawatha Valley Dairy Company. Later he attended Sun Prairie Truck Driving School, which led to employment with Elsworth Trucking Company, Austin, Minnesota, until an accident from which he became disabled.
His great love for nature lured him north to Hawkins, Wisconsin. From the deck of his home he could watch the black bear, deer, fox and birds coming into the many feeding stations he assembled. Because of his physical injuries, tolerating the cold weather became unbearable, and he sought the warmer climate of southern Missouri and the beautiful Ozark Mountains. He resided in Cabool until his death.
JR’s talents were many, and he shared what he had with anyone in need. His experiences with VIM (Volunteers In Mission) began his passion for working for the Lord. His travels took him to Minnesota, Michigan, Arkansas, Missouri and Wisconsin. He will be remembered for his caring heart and passionate desire to learn and share God’s Word and as a true servant of the Lord.
He is survived by two sisters, Betty Scherer Dill and Rosemary Scherer Carlson and husband Rod; a niece, Julie Dill Arnold and husband Jerry; two nephews, Michael Carlson and Nancy Sands, and Gregory Carlson; three great-nephews, Joshua, Jacob and Noah Carlson; a great-niece, Anna Marie Carlson; cousins in northern Minnesota and in Walldorf, Germany, plus many friends.
JR was briefly married to Debra Schraeder and from this union Lisa Marie was born.
A memorial service was held at the United Methodist Church in Cabool on March 3, 2012 with Dr. Michael D. Lawton officiating. Interment will be at Portland German Lutheran Church Cemetery, Portland, Wisconsin.
Cremation was under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.
