Marilyn Susanne Coen was born January 4, 1962 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decauter, Illinois, to Roberts Vern Coen, Sr. and Lila Irene (Bilyeu) Coen.
She departed this life on Sunday, July 24, 2011, at 2:00 a.m. at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri, after a five-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 49 years, six months and 20 days old.
In 1966 the Coen family moved to Missouri, buying a farm north of Cabool near the Bado area. The children attended Gravel Point and Cabool schools. Mary graduated with the Cabool High School class of 1980. She took vocational technical classes in auto body her senior year.
After graduation she lived with her parents and younger brother Bill for about a year, then moved to Knob Noster, Missouri, where she met and fell in love with George Ambrose, who was in the Air Force. After they were married, he received orders to move the newlywed couple and his two sons to Greece on the island of Crete.
After a short time there, George suddenly passed away. Mary and the two boys moved back to Mountain Grove, Missouri. She worked at Pizza Hut and a nursing home in Mountain Grove.
After living there about seven years, Mary moved back to the Warrensburg/Concordia, Missouri, area where she raised her two boys and worked at Wal-Mart and in nursing homes. She received her certified nurses’ aide training and worked at Johnson County Care in Warrensburg, Lutheran Nursing Home in Concordia, at Debbie Lynn’s, and back to Lutheran Good Shepherd Home, doing laundry, housekeeping and back to nursing, which she loved. She had been there eight years, living in Concordia with her boyfriend, Todd Nierman, a plumber.
Mary loved working with the patients and staff at LNH-LGSH. Her favorite color was blue, her favorite food was anything that doesn’t eat her first, her favorite place was at home with Todd and her dog, Ace, a pug, and her favorite pastime was fishing with Todd and spending time with friends and family.
She was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents; her husband, George Ambrose; her youngest brother, Bill Coen; her mother and father, Lila Coen and Robert Vern Coen, Sr.; and one sister, Barbara Coen Pilcher.
Surviving family members are her boyfriend, Todd Nierman; two sons, Vinson Ambrose and wife Jill, and Kevin Ambrose and wife Liz; two grandsons and two granddaughters; four brothers, Robert V. Coen, Jr. and wife Tina, Arthur Coen and wife Ellda, Oran Thomas Coen and wife Pat, and Alfred Coen and wife Patsy; two sisters, Linda Skaggs and Sandra Noakes and husband Perry; a favorite nephew, Brad Coen; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and visitation will be held October 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Roberts Park, Pine Avenue side, in Cabool.
