Norma Jean Miley

Norma Jean Miley, 96, of Raymore, Missouri, died Saturday, September 4, 2011, at Foxwood Springs Skilled Nursing Facility in Raymore.

Jean was born on May 11, 1915 in Newtown, Missouri, the oldest child of Ordie E. and Mary Almarie (Lowry) Cooley. She was raised in the Newtown area and graduated from Jameson High School, Jameson, Missouri.

She was united in marriage to Robert Keith Miley on October 20, 1935 in Jamesport, Missouri. The couple lived and farmed in northern Missouri, including Gallatin, Newtown, Lucerne and Laclede. Following daughter Shelda’s high school graduation, they moved to Kansas City, followed by Farmington, New Mexico; Cabool, Missouri; and the Colorado Springs, Colorado, area. They moved back to Missouri in 1965 and farmed in the Humphreys, Ravana and Kirksville areas. They retired from farming in 1978 and lived in Newtown and Raymore. She wintered with husband Keith near Brownsville, Texas; El Centro, California; and Mesa, Arizona.

Jean enjoyed gardening, traveling, spending time with friends and family, playing cards and square dancing with her longtime partner, Keith.

She was baptized at Center Grove Baptist Church, Newtown, and concluded her church membership at Raymore Christian Church.

Over the last ten years, the members of her church and the Foxwood Springs community were an unending source of comfort, encouragement, love and support day after day. She reveled in the fellowship and friendship she found in both communities.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Shelda Stoker and husband Jerry Ward of Kansas City; her grandchildren, Teresa Martin and husband Steve, and Michael Harms and wife Dawn; her great-grandchildren, Chase Martin, Spenser Harms and Alexis Harms; sisters-in-law Crystal Cooley, Juanita Cooley, Evelyn Cooley, Dixie Grosenbacher, Elinor Ball, Louise Miley and Dorothy Miley; brother-in-law Conard Miley; and multiple nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her father- and mother-in-law, John and May Miley; her husband, Keith Miley; brothers Herschel, Russell and Earl Cooley; sisters Francis Houston and Mina Hart; brothers-in-law Dick Houston, Clifford Hart, Leon Miley, Warren Miley and Bill Miley; and sisters-in-law Leora Sharp Shelton, Norma Jean Miley and Norma Jean Miley.

A funeral service was held September 9, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Newtown Christian Church, Newtown. Burial was at Lucerne Cemetery.
