Robert D. Short

Robert D. “Bob” Short, son of Ruth and Amos Short, was born on March 5, 1953 in Kansas City, Missouri. He passed away on March 19, 2011 at his home in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, following a long illness at the age of 58 years and 14 days.

Bob moved to Mtn. Grove one month after he was born and made it his home until his death.

Bob attended Mtn. Grove High School and graduated in 1971. He was united in marriage to Shirley on April 2, 1973 at First Freewill Baptist Church in Mtn. Grove, and to this union two children were born, Misty and Scott.

Bob started his young career in construction before working as a truck driver for Patsy Worrel at Worrel Transport; he then went to work for the City of Mtn. Grove for a short time before beginning an 18-year career as the maintenance director for Mtn. Grove School District. He was on the planning and zoning board for 12 years, a city councilman for 8 years and served as a firefighter for 20 years. Bob loved to help people, while serving on the fire department he helped to organize the current fire and rescue service. He took great pride in the department and “his boys,” Don Looper, Dean Curtis, Mark Bushong and David Hall, and helping get them where they are today.

His uncle, Bruce Long, raised him like his son; they had many good and special times together. There are special memories of setting up deer camp where he spent many hours with his son and grandchildren. Dr. David Barbe was a very special friend and they have had many good times as friends and as a patient. But most of all, his kids and grandchildren were the “sunshine in his eyes.”

Bob was preceded in death by his grandparents, Goldman and Cleo Long; his parents, Ruth and Amos Short; his mother- and father-in-law, Grover and Maurine Hopkins; a brother-in-law, Jerry Claxton; one uncle, Marshall Long; one aunt, Thelma Dobbies; and a sister, Sandi.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley of the home; his daughter, Misty Goforth and husband Donnie of Cabool, Missouri; his son, Scott Short and wife Ashley of Mtn. Grove; special friends Jodi Calus and Shelly and BJ Bell; five grandchildren, Dusty Goforth and wife Kari, Dakota Goforth, Heather Goforth, Trystan Short and Macenzie Short; three great-grandchildren, Tyler, Novey and Rylie Goforth; three brothers, Terry Short and wife Diane, Bill Short and wife Wilma, and Jim Percival and wife Sharron; three sisters, Charlene Claxton, Patty Long and husband John, and Judy Gilmore and husband Bob; as well as several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Bob was a loving and caring husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, brother, neighbor and friend. He loved his family; he leaves behind great memories of time spent with his family and especially his grandchildren. He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.
