Velma Loretta Mead

Velma Loretta Mead, daughter of John and Fanny (Pollard) Davis, was born on April 29, 1918. After a long and happy life she passed away Friday, April 16, 2010, surrounded by loving family in Cox Walnut Lawn in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 91 years, 11 months and 18 days.

Velma was united in marriage to Wayne Mead on February 12, 1935, and to this union five sons and two daughters were born. Together they shared 54 wonderful years before his passing in March of 1989.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; eight brothers and sisters, Cora Frisbee, Albert Davis, Alfred Davis, Charley Davis, Bill Davis, Nellie Chrisman, Hazel Davis and Ruby Silvey; six grandchildren, Tina Harvey, Debbie Mead, Harold Mead, Jr., Les Wayne Mead, Randy Mead and Sarah Fox; and one daughter-in-law, Diane Mead.

Velma is survived by her seven children, Dean and Susie Mead, Dennis Mead and Lester Mead, all of Cabool, Missouri, Harold and Shirley Mead of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, Loretta Fox of Springfield, Missouri, Lonnie Mead of Strafford, Missouri, and Cindy Mead of Hartville, Missouri; one sister, Esther Hobbs of Cabool; two brothers, Arlin Davis and Gene Davis, both of Cabool; eleven loving grandchildren, Candy Tanner, Larry Mead, Troy Mead and D.J. Mead, Tammy Splawn, John Mead, Amy Wasson, Raychele Banning, Brandon Mead, Nicole Ferrer, Dustin and Dylan Curtis; 17 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many dear friends.

Velma and Wayne made their home on a dairy farm near Oak Grove, Missouri, that had been homesteaded by earlier relatives, and lovingly raised their family. They were early members of Oak Grove Baptist Church near their home and after moving to Cabool, they were members and faithfully attended First Freewill Baptist Church.

When she wasn’t helping family and friends in the community, she enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening and cooking for her family and friends. She was a great cook. Velma was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, as well as a caring neighbor and friend. She loved the Lord and was eager to join Him and the rest of Christ’s family after telling her loved ones goodbye. They celebrate her life and accomplishments and will cherish the precious memories she created for family and many friends.

Services were at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 19, 2010, at Providence Church near Cabool with Rev. Bill Vandivort officiating. Pallbearers were Brandon Mead, Dustin Curtis, Dillon Curtis, Larry Mead, Robbie Mead and Bob Mead. Honorary pallbearer was John Mead. Interment was in Providence Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.
