David Calvin Shannon, son of the late Lyle and Fern (Smith) Shannon, was born on April 12, 1961 in Cabool, Missouri, and passed away on April 13, 2009 in Cox Medical Center South in Springfield, Missouri, following a six-month illness, at 48 years of age.
David grew up in Drury, Missouri, and graduated from Mtn. Grove High School in 1979. He was employed in construction work for many years.
He was an avid NASCAR fan and he loved watching races and sports on TV. A special memory was when he got to meet NASCAR driver Carl Edwards. One of his doctors was Carl’s wife who arranged the meeting.
He also was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family and friends. His nieces and nephews held a special place in his heart.
David was a caring and kind son, brother, uncle, great-uncle, neighbor and friend. He will be truly missed by those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by three sisters, April Shannon of Drury, Mary Byers and Lisa Shannon, both of Cabool; three nieces, Summer Cain and husband Jimmy, Amber Shannon and Dale Amundson and Brittany Byers; one nephew, J.D. Byers and wife Ebony; two great-nieces, Maya Cain and Celie Cain; two great-nephews, Jaydan Amundson and Trustin Amundson; and a host other relatives, friends and neighbors.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 16, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. in Craig-Hurtt Chapel with Rev. Gail “Bud” Scherer officiating. Song selections were “Amazing Grace,” “I’ll Fly Away,” and “Sing Me Back Home.” Pallbearers were Tyler Clark, Josie Clark, Seth Mayberry, J.D. Byers, Trustin Amundson, Jake Smith, Josh Shannon and Jonathan Roy. Honorary pallbearers were James Mayberry, J.B. Alsup, Doug Shannon, Gary Clark, Hugh Wayne Clark, Stanley Clark, Tommy Joe Coonts, Ron Cothran, J.P. Roy, Steve Souder, Eric Wheat, Dale Amundson, Rick Smith, Mike Virtue, Jimmy Cain, Brant Lee Lovan, Josh Virtue, Tom Sprague, Larry Sprague, Doug Wheat, Jason McGowan, Chris Roy and Jimmy Ray Souder. Burial was in Vanzant Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, Missouri.
