Dennis James O’Connor

Dennis James O’Connor returned to the Lord fortified by the sacraments of the Holy Roman Catholic Church on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, surrounded by loving family.

He was born in Rosati, Missouri, near Saint James on June 1, 1942 to Tom and Ruby (Engle) O’Connor. Dennis completed an associate’s degree at DeVry Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He then worked for the Saint Louis Junior College system for six years and repaired televisions in Saint Louis for four years.

Dennis was joined in holy matrimony to Alice Kathleen Horton on August 15, 1970 in Saint Louis, Missouri. After moving to the Ozarks, Dennis started his own business, Ozark Saw and Tool Sharpening, which he owned and operated from 1976 to 2001. During his proprietorship, he drove over 450 miles every week through his beloved Ozarks.

Dennis was dedicated and devoted to his Catholic faith and parish, Saint Michael in Cabool. He was a Past Grand Knight of his Knights of Columbus Council, Bishop Fulton Sheen Council #7442, based out of Willow Springs, Missouri. Dennis was a longtime member of Pope Saint Pius X Fourth Degree Assembly #1877 out of Springfield and was a charter member of the newly formed Pope John Paul II Fourth Degree Assembly #3196 based in West Plains, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Ruby O’Connor.

Dennis is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Alice; two sons, Michael of Columbia, Missouri, and Glen and wife Beth of Kansas City, Missouri; two wonderful grandchildren, Tom and Catherine O’Connor; two brothers, Donald and wife Wendy of Tujunga, California, and Michael and wife Cindy of Rogersville, Missouri; two sisters, Carol Parks and husband Mel of Orangeville, Pennsylvania, and Donna Barnhart of Rogersville; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who will miss this loving and gentle man.

A visitation was held on Friday, November 6, from 6:00-800 p.m. with a rosary service at 7:30. His Mass of Catholic Burial was held on Saturday, November 7, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church under direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to either Saint Michael Catholic Church of Cabool or to The Pregnancy Resource Center of Mountain Grove.

Dennis O’Connor’s wife and his entire family express their thanks and appreciation to all of the employees of Renal Care Group of Mountain Grove for the wonderful care “Popsie” received during his nine years on dialysis there. The family also thanks those who provided such loving and tender care at Saint John’s during his last week of life. The family expresses their gratitude to Pope John Paul II Assembly #3196 for providing a Fourth Degree Honor Guard for his funeral services.
