Homer Lee Bennett, a lifelong resident of Willow Springs, Missouri, unexpectedly passed away while at his home on Sunday, August 10, 2008, due to natural causes. He was 59 years old.
He was born April 1, 1949 to Homer C. and Hazel M. (Roberts) Bennett in Solo, Missouri.
Although Homer was born in Solo, he was raised in Willow Springs where he attended the local schools. He was a graduate of Willow Springs High School, Class of 1967. He went on to receive his bachelor of science degree in education and began his teaching career at Willow Springs Middle School where he taught seventh and eighth grade social studies. After 31 years of teaching, he retired and went to work for Kabul Nursing Home, Cabool, Missouri, where he was employed as a social service coordinator for approximately six years.
However, it was said that “drama was his passion,” which was evident by the fact that Homer acted in and directed several plays for the high school drama department and Willow Springs Theater Guild. He loved an audience and to put on a show. He made the best out of every situation and put humor in the lives of those around him.
He belonged to several organizations but was especially fond of Cabool Kiwanis, Willow Springs Theater Guild, and Missouri National Education Association. He was also a longtime member of First Baptist Church where he participated in the church’s choir until illness prevented him from further doing so.
He had many enjoyments in his life, such as working in his flower garden and taking care of the stray cats and skunks which always seemed to congregate in his yard. However, he especially enjoyed his daughters. It was said that he could curl hair, match clothes, cook, bake, and loved to play dress up. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother, and friend and will be greatly missed.
Homer was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Juanita Moore.
He is survived by his wife, Pamela Lou (Coatney) Bennett; his daughters, Nicki Bennett Johnson and husband Christopher of San Antonio, Texas, Karina Bennett and fiancé Andrew Smith of Mountain Grove, Missouri, and Courtney Bennett of Willow Springs; his son, Michael Hardman of Willow Springs; his brother, Dale Bennett and wife Betty of Houston, Missouri; his sister, Kay Miller and husband Bob of Houston; and grandchildren KayLee Johnson of San Antonio, Texas, and McKenna Smith of Willow Springs. He will be especially missed by his beloved dog, Trixie.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 16, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Willow Springs with Pastor Joel Hines officiating. A family night/visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at Willow Funeral Home. Interment will follow Saturday’s services at Willow Springs City Cemetery.
