La Vena Lou Mitchell

LaVena Lou Mitchell of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, formerly of Raymondville, Missouri, the daughter of Lyndle Lewis and Mary Frances (Day) Zumwalt, was born on October 28, 1956 in Rolla, Missouri, and passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at her residence following an extended illness. She was 51 years, nine months and seven days of age.

LaVena grew up and attended school in Raymondville and Houston, Missouri. She obtained her G.E.D. and later a bachelor of science degree in education. She was employed by the Lee Factory in Houston until its closing. She later worked for Houston Sportswear and also Kracker Jack Kleening service in Mtn. Grove until her health started failing.

She was married to Dewey Q. Barton on February 1, 1973. Two children were born to this union. They divorced in 2002.

She married Allen Mitchell on June 27, 2003. They made their home in the Mtn. Grove area for the past few years.

While living in Mtn. Grove she attended the United Baptist Church east of Mtn. Grove as long as her health permitted.

LaVena enjoyed being a homemaker, taking care of her family and spending time with her grandchildren and nieces and nephews, whom she adored.

She was preceded in death by her father, Lyndle Zumwalt, and by her grandparents.

Survivors include her husband, Allen Mitchell of their home; her mother, Mary Zumwalt of Houston; her son, Dewey Barton Jr. of Junction City, Kansas; her daughter, Amy Leggett and husband Roger of Cabool, Missouri; three grandchildren, Lacey, Brittany and Tyler Leggett; three stepdaughters, Jackie Emerick, Chauncie Mitchell and Kristen Mitchell; one brother, Gary L. Zumwalt and wife Peggy of Holden, Missouri; one sister, Mary Ann Cooper and husband Jack of Houston; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her very much.

Funeral services were held Friday, August 8, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. in Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove, with Rev. Junior Hutsell officiating.

Song selections were “March Of The Clouds,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” and “Prayer.” Pallbearers were Danny Murr, Larry Ratterree, Rodney Lathrom, Steven Coble, Jason Mitchell, and Kenneth Mitchell. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery under the direction of Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove.
