Lillie Belle (Martin) Ross, daughter of Argus Lee and Frances Leroy (Doris) Palmer, was born October 26, 1909, near Hartville, Missouri. She departed this life Saturday, July 12, 2008, in Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, Missouri, at the age of 98 years, eight months, and 16 days.
In 1927 she was united in marriage to Fred Martin and to this union two sons were born. He preceded her in death on September 9, 1932.
On December 9, 1932 she married Fred’s cousin, Jesse Anderson Martin, and to this union one daughter and two sons were born. He also preceded her in death on May 10, 1974.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, a great-great-granddaughter, four brothers, and three sisters.
Lillie is survived by five children, Donald Martin and wife Neeta, of Grovespring, Missouri, Ellis Martin and wife Lucille of Branson West, Missouri, Mary Lawler and husband Farris of Mountain Grove, Missouri, Jesse Martin, Jr. and wife Judy of Titusville, Florida, and Ted Martin and wife Merlene, of Mountain Grove, Missouri; two stepchildren, Cathryn Crunkleton and husband Dale of Harrison, Arkansas, and Jean Elliot of Marshall, Arkansas; 13 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; as well as a host of other relatives and many dear friends.
She was born and raised on the farm near Hartville and attended Durbin School. She remained in the Hartville area until moving to Waynesville, Missouri, in 1952, where she met and married Audy Ross in October of 1976, and together they shared 18 wonderful years, until his passing on August 8, 1994. Then in 1996 she moved to Cabool.
Lillie had made her profession of faith in Christ and was a longtime member of Elk Creek Baptist Church, where she was very active. After moving to Waynesville she attended Buckhorn Baptist Church.
She centered her life on her family and loved caring for them. She was also a great cook and had worked in various restaurants, simply for the love of cooking. In her spare time she enjoyed making beautiful quilts, fishing, working in her garden and canning.
Lillie was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and aunt and was a kind and caring neighbor and friend.
Services were held Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Holman-Howe Chapel in Hartville with Rev. Ronnie Turner officiating. Pallbearers were grandsons Craig Martin, Gary Martin, Terry Martin, David Martin, Mike Martin and David Quesenberry. Interment was in Durbin Cemetery, Hartville.
