Steven Keith Montgomery

Steven Keith Montgomery, 57, son of Emma and the late Earl Montgomery, was born on October 26, 1956 in Cabool, Missouri, and went to be with the Lord on Friday, May 30, 2014, in Hawaii.

Steve accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior when he was eight years old, was baptized and joined First Baptist Church. Steve, Lynnette and their family have been active in Cabool Christian Church for many years.

He grew up on a farm on Beeler Creek, one mile east of Cabool, where he enjoyed wildlife, hunting and fishing with his brother, Bill. Steve graduated from Cabool High School in 1975. He received a wildlife conservation and management degree from Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield in 1979 and worked three years for Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. He returned to Cabool in 1983 and managed Cabool Bowl for a few years, then worked for Cabool Schools. He joined the City of Cabool street department in June 1993 and was named head of the street department in December 1994. He was instrumental in the planning and development of the lake in Piney River Recreational Area.

On July 15, 1989, Steve and Lynnette Jean Lands were married at Grace and Glory Bible College in Mtn. Grove, Missouri. They purchased a small farm on PP Highway near Cabool in 1990 and they recently completed construction of their new home.

Steve is survived by his wife, Lynnette of the home; his mother, Emma Montgomery of Cabool; a son, Todd Montgomery and wife Kim of Cabool; and two daughters, Shilo Matherly and husband Curt of Cabool and Shannon Strickland and husband Dusty of Rogersville, Missouri; one brother, Bill Montgomery and wife Linda; niece Tracie Guffey and husband Clint and daughter Julian, and nephew, Mike Montgomery, all of Russellville, Arkansas; and his seven grandchildren, Austin and Alexis Hunter, Kara and Alyssa Matherly, Daltyn and Tyler Strickland, and Bennet Montgomery.

Steve adored his grandchildren and spent many hours playing ball, fishing and hunting with them. Most important to Steve were his faith and family. He was a remarkable husband, father, grandfather and son. Traveling with his wife, gardening, woodworking and doing anything with family were among his many interests. He was an example to others and will be greatly missed.

Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at Cabool Christian Church with Jeff Randleman officiating. Pallbearers were Todd Montgomery, Bill Montgomery, Curt Matherly, Mike Montgomery, Austin Hunter and Dusty Strickland. Interment was in Ozark Cemetery near Houston, Missouri, under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested contributions be made to Cabool Christian Church.
