Retired Lt. Col. Charles R. Hardy, 87, departed this life on Sunday, October 30, 2011. Born in Bellwood, Illinois, on October 21, 1924, he was a son of Aaron and Laura Hardy.
“Chuck” moved with his family from Bellwood, Illinois, to Cabool, Missouri. He played football, sold milk at lunchtime, and graduated from Cabool High School in 1942. He joined the United States Air Force December 9, 1942. After almost 27 years in the Air Force, he retired and went to work at the Springfield Airport as assistant director of operations on January 25, 1971. A little more than 16 years later he retired from the City of Springfield.
He was a generous and humble man who loved his family and his life. He was a golfer, a gardener and a “safety and security first” kind of guy. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hardy; brothers Aaron Jr., Lewis, and Vernon; and sisters Jean, Clara, and twins.
He is survived by brothers Tom Hardy and Ed Hardy; sisters Dorothy Johnson and Shirley Churchwell; three children, Karen Kimmons and spouse Jim, Charles L. Hardy and wife Loy, and Debra Hardy; six grandchildren, Pamela Jo, Rebecca, Ross, Letitia, Anthony and Charlie; and seven great-grandchildren, Samantha, Amy, Kimberly, Abby, Anthony Jr., Jacob and Talya.
Services will be held Thursday, November 17, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. in Missouri Veterans Cemetery by Springfield Lake. A memorial service and a gathering of family and friends is scheduled for Saturday, November 19, 2011, at 5:00 p.m. in American Legion Post #639, 2660 South Scenic, Springfield, Missouri.
