Jerome “Jerry” Backus, 91, Ozark, Missouri, passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2009, in North Park Village Assisted Living.
He was born March 31, 1918 in Sterling, Colorado, the son of Ward and Leona (Allison) Backus.
On April 3, 1942, he was united in marriage to Winona “Nonie” Evans.
Jerry will be remembered as a hard working man, a loving husband, caring father and a talented musician. From early childhood, his father traveled as a band master from school to school over greater portions of eastern Colorado. Jerry was surrounded by his father’s music and learned to play any instrument he picked up. Music and playing instruments became a source of family togetherness. His musical heritage continues today as his children and grandchildren have become music educators and very talented professional or amateur musicians.
Jerry also proudly served his country as a member of the United States Air Force from October 1940 to October 1945.
He was preceded in death by his wife on May 27, 2007; his parents, two sisters, one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.
Jerry is survived by his seven children, Donita Smith and husband Paul of Denver, North Carolina, Aderra Bryant and husband Harreld of Ozark, Pastor Jerry Backus, Jr. and wife Martha of Bull Shoals, Arkansas, Delrae Glidwell and husband Bob of Bolivar, Missouri, Beverly Altom and husband John of Ozark, David Backus of Carthage, and Pastor Daniel Backus and wife Kim of Houston, Missouri; 18 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; other caring relatives and good friends.
Funeral services were held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, November 9, 2009, in Barnes Family Funeral Home, Ozark, with Pastor Jerry Backus, Jr., Pastor Daniel Backus, and Chaplain Harold Williams officiating. Burial followed in Missouri Veterans Cemetery with full military honors.
