Jessie N. McMillin

Jessie N. McMillin, 94, was born the fourth child of Virgil and Minnie (Gilmore) Shelton on December 9, 1919 in Houston, Missouri. She passed away July 29, 2014 at Landmark Villa, Cabool, Missouri.

Jessie grew up on farms in Texas County around the Elk Creek, Houston and Cabool areas. She loved the outdoors, always choosing to work with her dad or brother instead of housework. Riding horses, fishing, and gardening were her favorites and remained so all of her life.

She married her school days friend Chester McMillin on October 21, 1940. They enjoyed 55 years of married life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Chester in 1995; two sons, Chester Jr. “Bub” in 1966 and Derrall “Sonny” in 2012; a grandson, Darin; four sisters and one brother.

Jessie is survived by her daughter, Joyce “Sis” Peabody of Houston, Missouri; a daughter-in-law, Doris McMillin of Montgomery, Texas; five grandchildren, Steve and Doug Peabody, Mike and Jeff McMillin and Dana (McMillin) Burt; eleven great-grandchildren; one great great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Jessie farmed and raised her kids on an Elk Creek dairy farm. She worked 27 years at the shoe factory in Cabool. Jessie was a member of Houston First Baptist Church, enjoying attending all the church functions, especially the XYZ’s, and cooking up a favorite dish to share when needed.

Jessie loved sharing her home and spending time with family and friends always having some food and stories to share. She was always ready to help a friend in need. She loved to walk and go for coffee with friends. Being a small person but having a strong will kept her healthy and active for many years. Jessie still mowed her own yard at the age of 92, which was something she was most proud of. She will be missed by all that knew and loved her perky way.

Memorials may be made to Texas County Food Pantry in her memory in lieu of flowers.
