SSgt. John S. Shelton, retired, was born in Dalhart, Texas, on August 31, 1933 to Virgil and Gracie (Ames) Shelton. He passed from this life after a sudden illness on August 30, 2011 at Harry S Truman Veterans Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
He attended Shasta High School in Redding, California, until he was drafted into the Army in 1955. While in the Army he served his country with honor and pride in Korea and Viet Nam.
He married his wife of 54 years, Libby (Woodward), in 1957, and to this union three children were born, Leilani, Marshall “Bubby” and Laurie.
After retiring from the Army in 1979 he turned into an avid flower gardener and wonderful grandpa to his six grandchildren: Ashley, daughter of Laurie, and Nick, Rose, Tori, Remington and Kayleigh, children of Marshall. He also had two wonderful great-grandchildren: Gracie, daughter of Ashley, and Aspen, daughter of Nick.
John is survived by his wife, Libby; his three children; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Gene Shelton of Redding, California; and two sisters, Maggie McLane of Gaines, Michigan, and Lemna Williams of Canton, Texas.
John loved to make people laugh and enjoy life. For many years he and his wife would go to the Lee factory in Houston and cook for the employees. He would show up at 5:00 a.m. and smoke brisket and ham with all the good food that went with them. On Fridays he would go and cash checks for people so they could enjoy their lunch and not have to rush to the bank.
John will never be forgotten by those whose lives he touched and will always be loved by his family.
