Michael Neil “Mike” Batten, son of Robert and Nona Martin Batten, was born December 25, 1942 in Yakima, Washington, and departed this life on July 19, 2013 in his home in Cabool, Missouri, at the age of 70 years, six month and 24 days.

He was united in marriage to Elsie Calhoun on May 7, 1961, and to this union two children were born.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Jimmy Batten and John Batten; and two sisters, Shirley Huff and Mary Batten.

Mike is survived by a daughter, Charlene Batten of Mansfield, Missouri; two sons, Rick Batten and wife Helen of Ava, Missouri, and Mike Hill and wife Saundra of Cabool, Missouri; a grandson he raised, William “BJ” Batten and wife Kellee of Robinson, Illinois, as well as six other grandchildren he loved dearly, Kimberly Hill Brower, Joey Hill, Jacob Batten, Jennifer Atchison, Ronnie Webster and Shyan Webster; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Batten and wife Elaine of Concord, North Carolina, and Donald Batten and wife Barbara of Shingletown, California; three sisters, Margaret “Peggy” Keyes of Anderson, California, Carol Hileman of Medina, Ohio, and Linda Bishop and husband Bob of Garden Grove, California; as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was raised in Washington and moved with his family to Missouri in 1958. He didn’t like school so his mother signed the necessary papers to let him join the Navy in late 1959. He proudly served his country until 1963 when he and Elsie returned to Missouri.

Mike was a truck driver most of his life but had also owned and operated Tri-County Furnace for many years.

He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was attending Cornerstone Chapel Church in Cabool where he had lived for the last four years.

In his younger years, he loved to hunt and fish. But most of all he loved to visit with friends or strangers. His family was very important to him and he loved being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mike was a loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and a caring neighbor and friend.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday, July 26, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. at Cabool Christian Church, Cabool, under the direction of Holman-Howe Funeral Homes, Mansfield, Missouri.
