Hugh Duane Lower, 78, of Cabool, Missouri, passed away Saturday, June 20, 2009, at St. John’s Regional Health Center in Springfield, Missouri.
He was born on January 9, 1931 in Mtn. Grove, Missouri, the son of the late Leslie and Gwendolyn (Bender) Lower.
Hugh was a 1951graduate of Mtn. Grove High School where he played football with the Panthers. His team won the Ozark Bowl all four years of his high school career. Hugh also attended Missouri University at Columbia and Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.
Hugh was united in marriage to Joy Ellison on June 15, 1952 in Cabool, and to this union two daughters were born, Terri and Deborah.
After serving in the U.S. Air Force, he began a 40-year careen in the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division of the Missouri State Highway Patrol as a CVE Supervisor I.
Hugh was a member of many organizations including the Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star, a Cub Scout Master and was vice chairman of Cabool Housing Authority Board. He was a longtime member of Cabool First United Methodist Church and served many years as board chairman, Sunday school teacher and was involved in many other church activities and committees.
Hugh enjoyed playing golf and antiquing; he also enjoyed sharing his patriotism through his extensive collection of military memorabilia with schools, churches and veterans’ organizations. Above all, Hugh’s greatest joy was spending time with his family.
Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie Lower and Gwendolyn Albert, and his daughter, Terri L. Bruner.
He is survived by his wife, Joy Lower of Cabool; his daughter, Deborah Woods and husband Richard of Gainesville, Virginia; his brother, Dr. David Albert and wife Barbara of Potosi, Missouri; a granddaughter, Breana Gronewald and husband Holland of Rolla, Missouri; a grandson, Branton Bruner and wife Lacey of Sugar Creek, Missouri; and five great-grandchildren, Mickayle, Olivia and London Gronewald and Caleb and Laney Bruner.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church of Cabool with the Rev. Art Ellsworth officiating. Pallbearers will be Ed Jarrett, Holland Gronewald, Branton Bruner, Jim Sigman, Sam Mudd and John Williams. Honorary pallbearers are Danny Fox, John Cook, Don Rust, Ernie Ullman, Bill Dickison, Bob Eisenhouer, George Darter, Dr. Dale Cartwright, Stanley Hannah and Jim Roark. Interment will be in Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be given to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 332, Cabool, MO 65689.
