Lloyd F. Smith, 84, of Girard, Kansas, died at 6:55 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at his residence.
He was diagnosed with cancer several years ago.
He was born January 22, 1925 in Ada, Kansas, a son of Fred and Ann Smith. He grew up and attended schools in Ada.
He served in the U.S. Navy/Merchant Marines on several ships from 1943 to 1946, receiving the Victory Medal and one star for the liberation of the Philippines.
He married Evelyn Fox on November 10, 1948 in White Church, Missouri.
He worked at a burial vault company and as a farmer at Cabool, Missouri, before moving to Girard in 1959. He farmed and worked at Producer’s Coop in Girard before retiring in 1975.
He was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Girard, the Knights of Columbus, and AARP.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn of the home; a son, Mike Smith and wife Connie of Wichita, Kansas; a daughter, Diane Maxson and husband David of Girard; grandchildren Jenna Simon, Kevin Smith, Kristan Smith, Kirk Smith, Scott Smith, Michael Maxson, Rebecca Maxson, Brittni Maxson and Kelli Rader; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Shelley of Cabool.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol King, on February 6, 1998; a grandson, Rick King, on June 7, 1991; five brothers, Leonard, Raymond, Frances, Bob and Ernie; and three sisters, Christine and two infants.
Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 3, 2009, at St. Michael’s Church in Girard with Fr. Robert McElwee officiating. Burial was in Girard Cemetery with military honors conducted by the George C. Brown Post No. 26 Amercan Legion of Girard.
