Orval Ray Garritson, son of the late Roy Garritson and Vera Flood (Carr), was born on January 22, 1935 in Pocatello, Idaho, and departed this life on Saturday, July 26, 2008, at his home in Cabool, Missouri. He was 73 years, six months and four days of age.
Orval grew up and attended school in Pocatello, Idaho. He was united in marriage to H. Ellen Savage on June 7, 1963 in Burbank, California, and to this union three children were born. They made their home in Ventura, California, and in the early 1970’s they moved their family to Cabool.
Orval served his country in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960. He worked for Mobil Oil Company as a roughneck until he was disabled by an oil field explosion.
He was known for his big Easter egg hunts, not only for kids, but also the adults. His home was always open for everyone; he never met a stranger. Orval loved every minute he spent with his grandchildren. He was a true jokester with a big smile and a big laugh with all of his funny stories. He enjoyed working outside until his health declined. He was known as Big Dad, Duke and Pa. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Orval was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ellen on September 23, 1993; an infant granddaughter, Zola Mariner; a brother, Gene Garritson; and a sister, Carol Vandiver.
He is survived by his son, Shawn Garritson and wife Faye of Fort Worth, Texas; four daughters, Christy Phinnell and husband Jerald of Grand Junction, Colorado, Kimberly Garritson of Kirkwood, Missouri, Shannon Maxvill and husband Michael of Cabool; a stepdaughter, Christy Mattoon and husband Jeff of Colorado; Sherry Faulkner of California whom he raised as a daughter; three brothers, Dale Garritson and wife Marge of Oceanside, California, Richard Lloyd of Florida and Leland Lloyd of Arkansas; two sisters, Vicky Cochran of Willow Springs, Missouri, and Nancy Goans and husband Bob of Doniphan, Missouri; 16 grandchildren, Mignonne and Cora Mariner, Jason and Krysta Mattoon, Brian Brandon, Robin and Anna Wells, Gabrielle, Samantha, Ellen and Claire Garritson, and Tiffany, Curtis, Megan and Aaron Maxvill; and two great-grandchildren, Bradley Diamond and Ian Story.
Services were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2008, at the funeral chapel with Calvin Bateman and Jake Vonallmen officiating. Pallbearers were Curtis Maxvill, Brian Wells, Brandon Wells, Bill Davis, Bob Cardwell and Kevin Hamilton. Interment was in Cabool Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Gentry-Carder Funeral Home of Cabool.
