He was preceded in death by his father, Newton Ulysses Crawford, Sr., who died last May, and his mother, Juanita Allen Crawford, who died in 2006.
He is survived by his wife Barbara and their ten children, Rachel Johnson of Melbourne, Florida, Brittany Gaines of Eldon, Missouri, Sonny Crawford of Cabool, Amanda Meyer of Springfield, Missouri, Sarah Crawford of Houston, Missouri, Sam Crawford of Houston, Ben Crawford of Cabool, Jill Adams of Rolla, Missouri, Daniel Crawford of Houston, and Martin Crawford of Houston. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren who called him “Gaffer.”
Growing up, Newton loved to read books and play the piano; he could play flawlessly after hearing a song even one time. He continued to pursue his love of literature, music, and history throughout his life.
He earned advanced degrees in history and became a professor, teaching for over 20 years at local universities, including Central Texas College, East Central College, Missouri State University in West Plains, and Columbia College. He was voted Teacher of the Year five times.
Newton Crawford’s large family will miss him deeply.
Memorials may be made to Union Cemetery or the Bado Church Youth Group, in lieu of flowers.
Visitation was held Wednesday, January 7, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home, Houston. Services will be Thursday, January 8, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at Evans Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Cunningham and Pastor Randy Scheets officiating. Pallbearers will be Sonny Crawford, Sam Crawford, Ben Crawford, Dan Crawford, Martin Crawford and Malachi Sawyer. Honorary pallbearers are Tom Meyer, Mark Gaines and Adam Adams. Burial will be in Hickory Ridge Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
