Nettie Alaine (Sawyer) Conley

Nettie Alaine (Sawyer) Conley, 93, of Houston, Missouri, passed away peacefully at Cox South Hospital, Springfield, Missouri, after a long illness.

She was born January 3, 1922 in Raymondville, Missouri, to James Franklin and America Alice (Barton) Sawyer.

She attended school in the Big Creek area until she had to go to work to help support her family. She was baptized at Big Creek in the 1950s by Rado Wilson. Nettie married Bluford “Bub” Conley; he passed away in 1959, leaving her to raise her children on her own.

Nettie is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant son, Bluford Conley, Jr.; three sisters, Cleta Wells, Lavada Stagner and Evelyn Sawyer; and two brothers, Johnny and Audrey “Bud” Sawyer.

Surviving are her children, Ella Daniel and husband Roy of Houston, Otie Conley of Springfield, and Vada Martin of Cabool, Missouri; her grandchildren, Sandra Hutsell and husband Jack, Shelia Washko, Sarah Schilling and husband Matt, Sherry Ritter and husband Tim, Leslie Nicole Hillen and husband Denton, Brian Jones and wife Cindy, Kasey Coffey and Jeremy Mitchell, Amy Everett and husband Michael, Andrea Grupe and husband Brian, and Waylon Martin; numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sylvia Goucher of Independence, Missouri, and Kathleen Sawyer of Houston; a brother, Samuel Sawyer of Raymondville; several nieces and nephews and many friends who loved her.

Nettie was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, canning, rock hunting, growing beautiful flowers and sewing. Her greatest love was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was very strong willed, stubborn and self-sufficient and did what she needed to do to survive. She suffered from blindness later in life, but that just made her more determined to live her life in her own way. It didn’t slow her down or stop her; she figured out a way to do crafts by touch or feel and made many beautiful braided rugs that she shared with her family.

She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Memorials may be made to Mahan Cemetery.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at Evans Funeral Home with Dr. Howell Burkhead officiating.
