Louise Murr

Mildred Louise (Oxley) Murr, daughter of the late Thomas Oxley and Hattie Susan (Bushong) Oxley, was born January 13, 1926, in Texas County, just north of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, and departed this life surrounded by family on June 11, 2016, at Kabul Nursing Home, Cabool, Missouri. She was 90 years, four months, and 28 days of age.

She was baptized at a young age at the Christian Church. She attended Bendavis Church of Christ, Bendavis, Missouri, until her death.

Louise grew up in the Brushyknob community, northeast of Mtn. Grove. She attended Mt. Zion School for first through eighth grades, Gravel Point High for ninth and tenth grades, and graduated from Mtn. Grove High School in 1943. She took teacher education in Mtn. Grove and did her student teaching at Gravel Point the last eight weeks of her senior year. Louise took the teachers’ exams after high school graduation and started teaching at Freely Give at the age of 17. Freely Give was ten miles from her home; she was paid $75.00 a month and she paid $15.00 a month for room and board. She taught 12 years in one-room, rural schools in Wright and Texas counties. Louise was an avid reader and instilled the love of reading in many of her students.

On October 20, 1950, she and Roy Murr went to Harrison, Arkansas, and were married. They started building their home in Graff, Missouri, where she resided for 60-plus years until her health started failing.

Louise and Roy were blessed with three wonderful children: Karen Susan (1952), Karma Ellen (1957), and Keith Roy (1960). Roy and Louise both taught school and farmed until Roy became ill. They continued to live on the farm in Graff as a happy family until Roy passed away in 1967.

She continued her education at Drury University and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in 1975. Louise continued teaching and retired with 40 years of service to schools in Wright County. She retired from Hartville Schools in 1986. Louise liked to travel extensively.

Louise is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; a brother, Melvin Oxley; and her stepmother, Hollace Oxley.
