He was born on February 13, 1939 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Robert, Sr. and Naomi (Cushman) Smith. He was a longtime resident of Mtn. Grove, Missouri, and previous owner of Country Express convenience stores.
Throughout his life he was driven by his need to care. Whether for his country in the Army, or caring to the daily needs of his farm, he could always be seen tending to something.
He brought a steadiness to the family and joy to all, always ready with a story to tell, always willing to teach someone how to fish, hunt, and play marbles or mushroom hunt. There is no competition; he was the best mushroom hunter in the Midwest.
Most of all, the family is thankful for how much he cared and loved Bonnie, his wife of 39 years. One of the best teams in life will now resume in heaven.
Robert is survived by his children, Elaine Smith, Vince Via, Marty Via and wife Kim, and Tanya Pullum and husband Stacy; his sister, Barbara Thomison and husband Charles; his brother, Ben Smith; nephew, Douglas Thomison; nieces, Laura Patrick and Cindy Schmiedeler; grandchildren, Cassandra Doty and husband Gordon, Dale Wert and Eli Wert, Sarrah Pullum, Stacia Pullum, Gracie Pullum, Emma Pullum, Christina Smith, Jennifer Taylor and Courtney Odle; great-grandsons, Jaxson Smith, Layne Smith and Brady Taylor. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved him.
