Irene Turner

Irene Ruth Roembach Turner, previously of Eldon, Missouri, passed away on June 20, 2018, in Lenexa, Kansas, at the age of 94. She had lived in the Kansas City area for the last seven years.

Irene was born on June 27, 1924, in Perryton, Texas, to Leon and Edith Roembach. After a move to Garden Plain, Kansas, the family relocated to Cheney, Kansas, where Irene completed high school. She graduated from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas.

On June 27, 1948, she was united in marriage with her high school sweetheart, Wayne Turner. They were married for 66 years, until his passing in 2014.

Following three moves through western Kansas, Wayne and Irene settled in Cabool, Missouri, with their three children. They owned and operated the local weekly newspaper, The Cabool Enterprise, for fourteen years.

One of Irene’s greatest joys was working with children and youth. She founded and directed the children’s choir at Cabool United Methodist Church and worked with the Girl Scouts. She appreciated the beautiful Ozarks, and the family enjoyed camping, canoeing, and picnicking.

In 1975, Irene and Wayne moved to Eldon, where they spent many joyful years involved with precious friends and an active church life at First Baptist. She started a weekly women’s prayer group that met for over twenty years. At Eldon First Baptist Church, Irene initiated the “Good Neighbors,” a monthly social program for handicapped adults. She also helped found the sheltered workshop in Eldon and served on its board for many years.

In her later years, Irene continued to correspond with numerous family members and friends. She remained positive and faith-filled and encouraged all those around her.

She and Wayne were blessed with three children: Steven (deceased), Kathleen McKenzie (Dennis), and Trudy Long (Ken).

Irene was preceded in death by her husband Wayne; son Steven; and three brothers, “Tex,” Ed, and Dick.

A celebration of Irene’s life was held at Cheney United Methodist Church, Cheney, Kansas, on Saturday, June 23, at 11:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held in Eldon later this summer.

Memorial contributions may be made to Vinita Cemetery, c/o Joyce Foley, secretary, 2683 SE 140th Ave., Cheney, KS, or Eldon First Baptist Church Missions Program, 209 S. Aurora St., Eldon, MO 65026.
