John William Shriver, 76 – Passed January 25, 2019

John William “Pepa” Shriver stepped into the presence of the Lord January 25, 2019, surrounded by his family in his home in Cabool, Missouri.

John was born October 16, 1942, in Nagle, Missouri, to Arthur and Ada (Brewer) Shriver.

John grew up in the Tyrone/Nagle area. In 1961 he graduated Park Hill High School and was married to Nora (Cantrell) in Kansas City, Missouri. John served in the U.S. Army 585th Transportation Battalion during the Vietnam War in 1967. After 21 months of service, he was honorably discharged.

John and Nora’s daughter, Marlene, was born in 1971. They were also foster parents to five children and host parents to five exchange students.

John worked as a mechanic at Fort Leonard Wood until he retired. After retirement, John could be found working on the farm. He enjoyed a number of interests and hobbies from collecting pennies, hunting deer, fishing to frogging. In playing cards, he favored rook, rummy, and spades. His favorite musician was Johnny Cash. Chocolate milk was a daily delicacy. He could frequently be heard saying something about “Britches,” “Wrench’ things out,” “Watteryerduren?”, “Mom,” “Sussy,” “Uh-huh,” “Pretty good!” or growling at his great-grandkids.

John grew up at Nagle Christian Church and was baptized at the age of twelve by Earl Sigler at Rock Garden Christian Camp. When asked what was different about that day that made him give his life to Christ, he responded, “I listened better.” His favorite preacher was Keith Cunningham because he was a cowboy who “did a lot of cutting up and shared the gospel while doing rope tricks.” In recent years, John was an active member of Cabool Church of Christ.

His favorite Bible verse was John 3:16 and his favorite Bible character was David. His favorite hymn was “Old Rugged Cross.”

John is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ada, and siblings David Lavern, Arthur “Junior,” Loyd, Chester, Lester, and Leatha.

He is survived by his brothers, Charles and wife Kathy and Walter and wife Muriel; his beloved wife, Nora; daughter, Marlene and husband Paul; grandchildren, Kingston and wife Krystal, and Alexis; great-grandchildren Zion, Zeal and Zoé; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

John left a legacy of love for friends, love for family, and love for God.
