Wanda Joyce Powell Barr was born August 13, 1929 in Concho County, Texas. Wanda passed away at her home in Sargent, Missouri, on May 5, 2019 at the age of 89 years.
Wanda was one of five children born to George Chester Powell and Altha Crouch Powell. She graduated from Paint Rock High School in Paint Rock, Texas. Wanda married her husband Billy D. Barr on June 22, 1946 in San Angelo, Texas. Together they purchased land in Brownwood, Texas, and raised cattle. They moved to Cabot, Arkansas, in 1956. In 1958 they had their only child, Bernal. In 1965 the family moved to Sargent, Missouri, purchasing land and continuing in the cattle business and later opening a tractor business. They raised their son and watched their family grow into in-laws and grandchildren and great-grandchildren who she dearly loved.
Over the years Wanda often worked in the retail business. She loved animals and gardening. She was as vibrant as the flowers she lovingly nurtured and loved. She had a joy for cooking and feeding all who stepped into her home. She would say, “My daddy always said, ‘Don’t bother cooking if you’re not gunna make enough.'” There was always an abundance of home-cooked food at Wanda’s table. After her husband Billy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Wanda took care of him at their home for over ten years up to his passing in May of 2015. Wanda was a woman of faith and she loved the Lord. She was an active member of the Church of Christ in Mountain Grove, Missouri. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the XYZ Club, and Republican Women. She loved and cherished her time spent with her friends and all of the activities they took part in together. Wanda also enjoyed spending her spare time volunteering at S.O.S. Thrift Store in Cabool, Missouri.
Wanda remained active and independent her entire life and up to her very last day. She was loved by all who knew her. She was loving, generous, and full of the love of living life. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents, Chet and Altha Powell; two brothers, Noel and Ed; her sister, Yvonne; and her husband, Billy Barr.
She is survived by two brothers, Bernie and Victor Powell; her son, Bernal Barr and wife Stella; grandchildren Janelle Barr Bassett and husband Colin, Casey Lynne Barr, and Lyric Barr; and great-grandchildren Edith and Joan Bassett, as well as many other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 18, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Church of Christ, 411 West First Street in Mountain Grove, Missouri, followed by a burial service at Sargent Cemetery for the family.
